Why should we care if a player cheats or uses performance enhancing drugs?
Why should we care? The game is played 100% for our benefit. I like seeing homeruns so why should I care if some players cheat in order to do something that I like them to do? There are certain players I really like to watch play and when they retire, I'll probably be a little sad, so wouldn't it be better if they did HGH so they could play longer? Barry Bonds is the new homerun king and yes, he probably did steroids; but so what. I get to say I saw one of the most famous records fall in my life time. And, it will probably be broken by some other cheater using undetectible drugs in the future. Also, since the records been broken, lifes been exactly the same. It didn't hurt anything and didn't help anything. From what I read, steroids became illegal in the early 90s, which means they were probably used long before then. Players have probably always cheated and always will. What good would it do if they didn't though? They'd probably be better role models and thats it, so whats the deal? Yeah the players play for money, but 100% of that money is supplied by the fans. Without fans, they don't get money, which means they are infact playing for the fans.

- Because if you're apathetic to cheating in sports, where does it stop? "So what, that guy robbed a bank. It wasn't my bank, so I don't care." "I get to say I saw one of the most famous records fall in my life time. And, it will probably be broken by some other cheater using undetectible drugs in the future."--your direct quote Yes, you get to see on of the greatest records in sports fall, but, if it was done by someone using performance enhancers, was it really that person breaking the record? Personally, I like Barry Bonds, and I think he's a great player, but I can see the other side of this argument. One of the reasons we watch sports is for the spectacle, yes, but the spectacle is the fact that these men and women are pushing the limits of human strength in a display that most of us will never be able to attain. Using performance enhancers ruins the integrity of sports and undermines what an athletic competition is all about. The human strength is part of the aesthetic of the game. When you start genetically altering humans, animals, or anything else, you're deviating more from sport into a scientifically created competition. If steroids weren't banned, then the question wouldn't be, "Who's the best athlete," but, "Who has the best scientist?" As a former athlete, I would be sickened to know that somebody against whom I played did it unnaturally. Yes, we're all partially to blame for demanding this sort of spectacle, but that doesn't mean we have to stand for it. True athletes play for the sport, not the money, and I know that's naive to say, but the majority of athletes in this country aren't professional (I'm not saying that some professionals play b/c the love the money more than the game).
- Chicks Dig the Longball. We all get to say that we can also Say the Ball was caught by a mets fan on his way to australia. Once People Stop acting like jerks about it then we wont have to care
- well if ur a true fan of the sport or play it yourself as i do you understand the integrity of the game and when you got cheaters it completely fucks up the integrity
- It is about the integrity of sports AND society in general. Yoy should care because we try to teach values to our children. We don't want them to see these guys get away with it, and grow up thinking that anything is okay as long as you don't get caught. You must not have much sense to ask a question like this!
- some people cheat some dont some people are honest some aren't so life goes on yes it hard to see your favorite celebraty doing drugs and cheating it makes you feel sad and disapointed but as i said life goes on.
- You must be morally bankrupt if you need to know the answer!
- You don't have to care, it's really personal opinion. Did cheating get Bonds where is now? Yes. Despite being a Hall of Famer beforehand, Bonds needed to get better AFTER getting worse in order for him to get the HR record. Consider that if Alex Rodriguez had the same increase in statistics, he would have over 1k in HRs by the time his career is done. There are two sides to the problem. On one hand, baseball benefited greatly from all the home run power that came with roids. On the other, it's a dangerous way to gain a performance enhancement, and it's not something that baseball should be indirectly "marketing" to the kids.
